Logan Fischer’s three rushing touchdowns helped the Saskatoon Hilltops survive a scare and defeat the host Edmonton Huskies in Prairie Football Conference action on Sunday afternoon. The Hilltops, who led 22-0 at one point, allowed the Huskies to score 20 straight points, before bouncing back for the 35-20 win.

Fischer’s two first quarter touchdowns made it 14-0 Hilltops early. Tom Schnitzler, normally a defensive line player, scored on a one-yard touchdown toss from Jared Andreychuk. After a safety, the Hilltops lead 22-0 after the first quarter and appeared to be in complete control. Despite a second quarter field goal by Cole Sabourin, the Hilltops were still up 22-3 at the half.

However, the Huskies made a game of it, as Connor Bergersen hauled in two Brad Launardt touchdown passes in the third quarter. Then Sabourin hit his second field goal in the fourth quarter, and suddenly it was 22-20 for the Hilltops.

But Fischer restored a two score margin for the Hilltops with his third TD of the game with 9:59 remaining. Quarterback Jared Andreychuk capped the scoring with a major of his own in the dying seconds, and the Hilltops secured the win.

The Huskies limited Fischer to only 66 rushing yards on 17 carries but he made them pay when it counted. Leading Huskie ball carrier was quarterback Launardt himself with eight carries for 64 yards. He was also 21-for-38 for 64 yards. Andreychuk was solid for the Hilltops, racking up 218 yards on 20-for-28 passing to seven different receivers.

Saskatoon moves to 2-0 on the season, maintaining a share of first place in the PFC with the Calgary Colts. The Colts defeated the Regina Thunder 36-17 on Sunday. Saskatoon will entertain the Colts on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at SMF Field.
