PFC Semi Final

It was another classic battle with Regina that came down to the dying minutes but the Saskatoon Hilltops prevailed and will return to the PFC final.

Regina kicker James Reid missed a 23-yard field goal attempt, after making his previous three tries, with under two minutes to go and the Saskatoon Hilltops would beat the Thunder 25-24 in the PFC semi-final. Following the field goal miss Saskatoon would take over at their own 35 and thanks to the running of Logan Fischer (pictured) they drove the ball down to the Regina side of the field and left almost no time left on the clock for any potential game winning drive.

Fishcer would lead the Hilltops with 63 rushing yards and 81 receiving yards while scoring a touchdown. Ryan Turple added a 24 yard touchdown catch, quarterback Jared Andreychuk finished the day 15/35 for 204 yards with the touchdown pass. The winning points were scored on a recovered blocked punt in the end zone by Adam Benkic. Saskatoon led Regina 25-9 at one point but the Thunder would battle back, Hilltops head coach Tom Sargent says that once Regina came back it was “gut check” time for his team.

“The fifth years did a good job of leading. We knew it was going to be a tight game. We had some chances early on to maybe get some separation but we were just struggling on offence and just couldn’t make the right plays at the right time. You say all that but then in the fourth quarter, in the last three minutes, we got a few first downs that were critical to closing the game out. That’s what championship teams do, they figure out what they need to do and how they need to do it to walk away and just ultimately play next week and that’s what we are doing.” Sargent said.

Hilltops defensive lineman Tom Schnitzler says Regina gave the one-loss Hilltops their toughest games of the entire year. “Played them three games now, and each one has come down to the last play or the last drive. Congrats to them they had a great season but thank goodness we came out with the win at the end.” Schnitzler explained.

Saskatoon will aim for a third PFC title in a row at Saskatoon Minor Football Field this Sunday. The Hilltops will host the Calgary Colts, who are the only team to beat the Hilltops this year. Calgary advanced thanks to an 11-10 semi-final win over the Edmonton Huskies.
